Band 8 Academic Task 1: Solar Panels

I wrote this band 8 response for a recent task that was reported by test takers in Vietnam. I spent about 2 minutes reading and analyzing the task, about 5 minutes writing the first draft, and about 10 minutes revising and refining the response. It was later scored by a trained IELTS trainer, as well as my trained ChatGPT agent.

The diagrams illustrate how a solar panel is structured, as well as how it can be utilized for heating air and water. Overall, it is a rather simple box that allows the fluid to flow through it and be heated by the sun shining through its top cover.

The panel consists of a shallow box with a transparent top cover, an inlet on one side and an outlet on the opposite one. The latter two are connected to their respective pipes.

In panels used to heat air, cool air is directed into the box through the inlet, while solar radiation penetrating the transparent top transfers heat energy to it. As the air heats up, it exits the panel via the outlet.

A water-heating panel differs structurally in that it includes a coiled water pipe mounted directly beneath the transparent cover and attached to the inlet and outlet. Once cold water runs through the coil, it absorbs the solar heat energy, leaving the system through the outlet as warm water.
